on a balmy tuesday afternoon, on the grounds of the famous sangeetha nataka akademi at thrissur, with vespa motors and car hooters blaring continuously while actors, writers, photographers, dancers, painters and sculptures from all over kerala came together to exhibit and share their wares, a number of us (from south africa, kenya and india) gathered suddenly to make music impromptu – kerala is one of the poorest provinces in india, and yet has remained the region with the highest levels of literacy, nationally, for decades. here, they call it “god’s own country”
